19th in the Top 100 Wines of Italy 2021 by jamessuckling.com. 98 Points.
This is a really racy and fine Siepi with currant, black-cherry and dark-chocolate character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very long, intense tannins that are linear and fine-textured. Really builds on the palate. Super structure. Finesse with power. Try after 2024 and onwards.

Tasted by Georgina Hindle (at Bordeaux, 20 Jul 2021) Part of Tasting September fine wine releases via the Bordeaux Place

This has the same owner, location and team as Concerto – the Mazzei family who founded the estate in 1435 but this is a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Power and seduction straight away on the nose, this smells intensely of black cherries and blueberries. The palate is juicy and instantly mouthwatering giving an abundance of succulent red berries and a touch of herbal spice on the finish. This is excellent quality, I adore it. Smooth and silky with purity and energy. Really shines in the glass – drinking well now but will also age. The second vintage on the Place for Siepi since its debut last year.

96 Points. Wine Spectator. Perfumed and elegant, this red features vibrant cherry, black currant and blackberry flavors allied to a supple texture.
Offers mineral, tobacco, wild herb and spice accents that add detail, with lively acidity keeping it defined and persistent. Harmonious, with excellent finesse and a long aftertaste. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2043. From Italy.—B.S.

The Chianti Classico of the Mazzei family’s estate, nay village (see above), Fonterutoli outside Castellina
in Chianti, is widely admired…. Overall I was very impressed by how well this blend worked. As a great fan of top-quality Sangiovese, I
was glad that none of the wines seemed to be loose, sweet and fat in the way that sloppily raised Merlot
can be. The Tuscan Sangiovese character was sufficient to provide a truly appetising wine.

Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Siepi 2013 IGT Toscana 17+
Alcohol: 14.29%. Total acidity: 6.88 g/l. Demanding growing season with 35% more precipitation than
usual in the first seven months of the year so quite a bit of disease pressure. Good diurnal temperature
variation from late July. Harvest: hand-picked from 11 September (Merlot), 28 September (Sangiovese).
Fermentation temperature: 26–28 °C. Period of maceration: 14 days (Merlot), 18 days (Sangiovese).
Ageing: 18 months in small French oak barrels (225 litre, 70% new). Bottling: September 2015.
    Production: 30,000 bottles.
Dark crimson. Well-melded nose that’s so luscious it almost smells like melted butter. The palate is a bit
less unctuous with a dry finish and tastes like the ultimate food wine: claret build (no apparent excess of
alcohol at all) but with a real Tuscan kick on the end. Very sappy and energetic.

Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Siepi 2015 IGT Toscana 17.5
Lighter garnet than some vintages, certainly than the 2013. Very appetising and very Tuscan and distinctive.
That earlier bottling seems to have paid off, with the fruit very slightly more intense than the
2013 although both vintages are similar stylistically. This has particularly impressive persistence

Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Siepi 2016 IGT Toscana 18
Transparent crimson. Very luscious and ripe but contained in Sangiovese freshness which completely
dominates the richness of Merlot. Really tangy and appetising. Great balance and a great tribute to the
    vintage. Perfect balance

Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Siepi 2017 IGT Toscana 17.5

Deep crimson. Really very luscious nose in which it’s possible to discern both Merlot and Sangiovese,
which have already combined to produce a thoroughly satisfying whole. There’s still quite a bit of tang
and acidity on the finish but the tannins are more evolved than one might expect at this early stage so
this is a really vibrant, appetising wine but probably not one of the longest-lived Siepis

Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Siepi 2018 IGT Toscana 17+

Full bottle 1,503 g. Alcohol: 14.53%. Total acidity: 5.9 g/l. Large crop produced by a fairly classic
growing season preceded by useful precipitation. Tuscans were happy with this vintage. Harvest: hand-
picked starting from 12 September (Merlot), 22 September (Sangiovese). Fermentation temperature:
26–28 °C. Period of maceration: 14 days (Merlot), 18 days (Sangiovese). Ageing: 18 months in small
French oak barriques (Merlot) and tonneaux (Sangiovese), both 70% new, before four months in
concrete tanks. Bottling: June 2020. Production: all of 38,000 bottles.
Mid crimson – not that dense. Rather voluptuous with an undertow of richness. Merlot slightly trumps
Sangiovese in this vintage (whereas Sangiovese tang seemed to dominate the 2017). Thicker and
sweeter than the 2017 with just a little hint of oak still.

Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Siepi 2019 IGP Toscana 17++

Full bottle all of 1,466 g. Alcohol: 14.7%. Total acidity: 5.88 g/l. Classic growing season and abundant
crop with sufficient rain in spring and good diurnal temperature variation in summer. Harvest: hand-
picked starting 18 September (Merlot), 1 October (Sangiovese). Fermentation temperature: 26–28 °C.
Period of maceration: 14 days (Merlot), 18 days (Sangiovese). Ageing: 18 months in small French oak
barrels (225 litre for Merlot, 500 litre for Sangiovese). Then four months in concrete tanks. Bottling: June
    2021. Production: 35,000 bottles
Lively, sinewy nose of balsamic. Very appetising and sleek-fruited. Already enjoyable. Quite a feat!
Marked acidity but fun. Easier to see the Sangiovese than the Merlot, so this is a genuine representative
of Tuscany and the hills it was grown in, but it still has a long way to go.

Siepi, der Supertuscan von Castello di Fonterutoli der Familie Mazzei, entsteht erstmals im Jahr 1992.

    2013:

Powerful, deep dark ruby, light garnet shimmer. Presented at the beginning with a markedly spicy note Notes, plus lots of leather, dried plums and some blackberries, fine liquorice. Juicy and firm in the approach and course, surprisingly remained fresh, shows a lot of black cherry and blackberry, fine-meshed tannin, the Sangiovese is becoming more and more evident

Mazzei – Castello di Fonterutoli 2013 Siepi Castellina in Chianti (Chianti Classico, Siena), Tuscany
    Red wine from Italy
    Drinking window: 2018 – 2028
Mazzei’s 2013 Siepi is terrific. Precise and beautifully focused throughout, the 2013 offers up a compelling mélange of dark cherry/blueberry jam, sweet spices, menthol, licorice and new leather. Unctuous to the core, the 2013 retains striking nuance and poise throughout. The 2013 is an exciting Siepi, but it needs time to unwind.

    99 points
The 2019 Siepi continues a trend towards greater finesse and nuance in this wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, licorice and plum meld together effortlessly in the glass. Dense and layered, with striking detail, the 2019 is so impressive. The flavors are bright, bold and punchy. An exceptionally beautiful and riveting wine, the 2019 is rich and concentrated, but not at all heavy. What a total knock-out.
